This installation was on a 4-story home, and the tech had not yet gone to the basement to troubleshoot the “infinity” water source heat pump, as he was told he by the homeowner. He was in the attic at the infinity furnace above the 4th floor. He was getting his dcv in the proper range on his A and B green plug on the air handler, 3 to 4 vdc. His indoor board ohm reading was in range, 28k to 32 k. The tech ohmed out the A and B thermostat wires on the water source heat pump from the upstairs. His ohm reading was not in range of a normal infinity board. His reading was around 64.4k. The tech then made the long walk to the basement where the “geothermal heat pump” was located. Bingo.

System Vu Controller Pt 1
The commercial and light commercial equipment today has changed so much from the days of mechanical time clocks and relays. These systems are connected to digital controllers and can be operated on site or monitored remotely via the internet.
One such control is System Vu. It is a unit management controller designed to be used as a stand-alone controller. System Vu has also been set up as a fully communicating control that will connect to Carrier Comfort Network (CCN), Carrier i-Vu, and other third party BACnet building management systems. Several systems can be connected together using a three-wire communication bus, and units equipped with Direct Digital Control (DDC) can be connected also.

System Vu does not require a computer to be connected to it in order to start up a system. There are only six buttons on the controller; the up and down arrow buttons, BACK, ENTER, MENU, and TEST buttons. These keys are used to navigate through the different levels of the menu structure. These six buttons allow you to maneuver through the seven main menu items and the submenus within them. The expanded readout gives a detailed explanation of the control information.

Through the System Vu controller, the user can access all of the inputs and outputs to check on their values and status, configure operating parameters, and evaluate the current decision status for operating modes. The control also includes an alarm history which can be accessed from the display. The user can access a built-in test routine that can be used at start-up commissioning and troubleshooting.
The system Vu controller is a complete unit management system and this is just an introduction to the controller. Next month we will discuss more of the operations of this System Vu interface control.
