Puron Advance™, or R-454B, is a class A2L refrigerant that is a blend of R-32 and R-1234yf. It will gradually replace R-410A in accordance with the EPA’s HFC Phasedown Schedule. Puron Advance has a lower GWP (Global Warming Potential) than previous refrigerants.
No, Puron Advance™ is not a drop-in replacement for R-410A. Though the pressures and temperatures are similar, they require new compressors and expansion devices for proper operation. R-454B should not be used in any R-410A systems.
No, there is absolutely no propane content within Puron Advance™ refrigerants.
As mentioned above, R-454B has a lower GWP than R-410A. It has no ODP (Ozone Depleting Potential) and is more energy efficient than R-410A.
On January 1, 2022, the EPA mandate went into effect with a 10 percent reduction in the production and use of HFC refrigerants from previous baseline levels. On January 1, 2024, the EPA increased the reduction level to 40 percent. As seen in the graph below, the HFC phasedown will continue at this 40 percent reduction level for the next five years, at which time the industry will see another 30 percent reduction in the production and use of HFCs.

Puron Advance™ equipment must be installed from January 1st, 2025, onward. After December 31st, 2024, parts and components will remain available to service R-410A equipment. If a coil needs to be changed, a replacement unit can be ordered “for service only” as mandated by the EPA. All R-410A equipment that is available today will have replacement parts available through Replacement Components for the intended service life of that product. No, you will not need to change out all of your tools. Most existing vacuum pumps and recovery machines will work with R-454B. It’s best to check with the manufacturer first, especially on older models including leak detectors. Because the pressures are so similar between R-410A and R-454B, you can continue to use the same hoses but will need to update analog and digital manifolds to ensure the new refrigerant is included on them. New R-454 B tanks will have left-handed threads on them, so be sure you have an adapter that will work with all your existing tools. Electronic tools will need to be verified to be spark-proof. You will need to update any saturation temperature visual aids as well.
